Making Gold, Not Money

While most people are seeing dollar signs when they think of dominating Diablo 3's Auction Houses, I'm thinking about gold. My only goal right now is to make as much gold as possible prior to dueling and then the (hopefully coming soon) real PvP update.

Why gold? Because gold is so damn worthless right now.

If I had to guess, I would say gold is actually trading at around 17 cents, not 25 cents like Blizzard artificially capped it at. But even if you cannot pay less than 25 cents for a million gold, you certainly can pay less than you did for bigger ticket items.

Skorns I used to sell for $40 are now trading around $30. This led me to believe that the price of gold has actually declined, even if it still has a minimum of 25 cents per million.

So again, the question remains: why stockpile gold instead of dollars?

I believe that this next patch, along with a future PvP update, are going to make people play Diablo 3 again. For real this time, with real social goals such as dominating the PvP scene. This game desperately needs a ladder of some type, something to make me play beyond the item hunt. I need to item hunt for a purpose, and that purpose can't just be to item hunt better! If done correctly, these patches could dramatically increase the price of gold. I'm hoping that it eventually gets to 50 cents per million.

Every time I make a dollar now, I buy items priced too low on the RMAH and relist them on the gold auction house. That's right, I do not use the option to buy gold directly because it's just too expensive. Gold is definitely worth 17 or less cents per million.

Do you think it's a wise decision to focus on stockpiling gold? Or will the price decline even further to the point where Blizzard must once again step in and change the amount of gold we can sell as a minimum? Previously they changed it from 100,000 gold to 1,000,000 gold. Perhaps that will happen again if gold becomes so valueless that nobody is buying it for 25 cents per million. If that happens then I'm wrong and I'll lose a lot of potential money.
