What Rares to Sell from Farming

I am sure that many of you don't even bother looking at the rare items that you identify. Today I'm going to change your outlook and make you a lot of gold from basic farming runs in Diablo 3.

There are two questions which need answering when it comes to farming: Where should you be farming and what items should you bother listing on the auction house?

1. Where should I farm for great items?

Farm inferno or hell at a monster power that allows you to two shot almost all normal monsters. One shot is preferred. You also need to be able to survive taking the occasional hit or two, else you will waste gold from dying. This is incredibly subjective, but try to use those two points as guide lines.

2. What items should I sell on the auction house?

Truth be told, the vast majority of items you pick up are not worth more on the auction house than their vendor price. In many cases, you are better off salvaging the items and selling the resulting materials! You should always be aware of salvage results for all item types (amulets and rings salvage into better materals than other similar level items) as well as the current auction house value. Write down these prices before you run off and farm. The prices to check are tears, essences, and fiery brimstones. Keep in mind that these items sell incredibly fast once you list them, so it is worth your time to check vendor prices compared to potential salvaging results. Plus, worst case scenario is three gold auction house slots temporarily used up. Remember that a rare will give you both an essence and a tear. Don't count on it for your calculations, but the more you salvage the better chance you have of the occasional fiery brimstone from rares.

If you avoid dying and just vendor or salvage, then you should break even or do a little better than that from farming.

So that's what you should do with the vendor / salvage trash, but what about the items worth big money? For the purpose of not writing a book on the subject, I'm sticking to max level items that drop from inferno.

Personally, I like to sell five categories of rare quality loot (yellow) from Inferno farming:

A. Amulets and Rings
I'm looking for vitality, primary stat, socket, and any attacking stats (I go into a lot more detail in the gold guide about this particular item type, so I don't feel comfortable revealing all my tricks here). I will make anywhere from 50,000 to a few million gold per ring/amulet.

B. Shields
If the shield has high armor, vitality, primary stat, socket, and class specific properties, then I will attempt to sell it. I am content to make 500,000 gold for a shield of this caliber.

C. Weapons
If a 2 handed weapon has 18 reduced level requirement then I will attempt to sell it for 50% of market value. This could be anywhere from 50,000 gold to a few million. If a 1 handed weapon has high dps, strength and vitality, then I will attempt to sell it to barbarians.

D. Helms, Chests, and Pants
These items need to have sockets to be worth anything, along with specific stats that boost curb appeal. The helm should have +crit or some debilitating bonus like chance to fear. They also all need vitality and primary stat.

E. Boots
Movement speed % of 12 along with high vitality and primary stat make any pair of boots sell for 500,000 to a few million.

  1. I am developing (even slowly) a gold guide oly spreadsheet. With all you can make with Blacksmith and the Jeweller. Similiar to the old version of it, that is actually on the gold guide. It will suport Salvaging. So you will know how much you will profit even before you salvage the thing.
